Recipe Question: Whole Wheat Flour to White Flour

Nancy asked a Recipe Question:

I want to use whole wheat flour in a recipe instead of all purpose flour. Do I use the same amount and will it turn out the same?

Ms Recipe’s Answer:

If I had the exact food item your trying to make I may be able to give you a clearer answer to your question, but I’ll give it a try.

Figuring out the ratio of whole wheat to white flour takes a little playing with because the density of wheat flour is different then white flour.   Generally speaking, 1/2 cup or 1/2 cup and 1 tablespoon  of whole wheat flour to one cup of white flour. It may take a bit of trial and error, but it’s possible with some experimenting.  Let me know, if you have any more questions about it.

Their are different kinds of whole wheat flour which causes some of the confusion because one is heaver then the other. bread whole wheat flour is heaver then whole wheat cake flour.

Tip: You don’t need to sift whole wheat flour.

We always substitue WW flour for white. It only becomes tricky in more delicate dishes like crepes… =)
